Your house is freezing. The thermostat says 70 degrees. But the air coming out of the vents feels like it’s been dragged through a walk-in freezer. You’re staring at a dial that isn’t working, and your heating bill is already high enough without adding a repairman’s trip charge to the mix.
Here’s the truth: electric furnaces are stubbornly simple. There’s no gas line to leak. No pilot light to reignite. Just electricity, resistance coils, and fans. If it’s not heating, something in that chain is broken. And in most cases, you can find the break yourself before the sun goes down.
Let’s walk through the most common failures. We’ll start with the easy stuff. Then we’ll move to the stuff that requires a screwdriver and a multimeter.
The Thermostat: Is It Even Asking for Heat?
Before you tear into the walls, look at the thermostat. It sounds obvious, but people miss this constantly.
Is it set to “Heat”? Is the fan set to “Auto” or “On”? Sometimes the fan runs just to circulate air, but the heating elements stay off if the temperature setting isn’t above the current room temp. Raise the setpoint by five degrees. Wait ten minutes. Listen.
If you hear a click, then silence, the signal isn’t getting through. If you hear the hum of the blower but no heat, the problem is downstream. If you hear nothing at all, the thermostat might be dead, or the power to the unit is cut.
Check the Breaker and the Disconnect Switch
Electric furnaces demand a lot of amperage. When those heating elements try to fire up, they draw a massive surge. If your home’s electrical system is old or overloaded, the breaker trips. It’s a safety feature, not a malfunction.
Go to your main electrical panel. Look for the breakers labeled “Furnace,” “HVAC,” or “Heat.” They are often double-pole breakers (two handles tied together). If one is in the middle or flipped to the “Off” position, flip it fully to “Off” and then back to “On.”

There’s also a safety switch near the unit itself. Look for a box mounted on the wall or the side of the furnace cabinet. It’s usually white or gray with a big red button. This is the disconnect switch. If it’s been tripped, push the button in. You might feel a slight resistance. That’s the magnetic latch resetting.

The Blower Motor: Is Air Moving?
Heat needs to move. If the blower motor isn’t spinning, the coils get hot, the limit switch trips, and the furnace shuts down to prevent a fire. The result? Cold air. Or no air.
Stand near the furnace. Turn the heat on. Do you hear the whine of the motor? Can you feel air moving from the registers?
