Sourcing and Limitations

Go to your local Home Depot. You’ll find light-gauge studs. That’s it. For exterior walls or load-bearing structures, you need heavy-duty gauge. You won’t find those on the shelf. And don’t think you’re getting rid of wood entirely. Steel frames still need wood for trim. For window and door jambs. For bathrooms where plumbing pipes anchor into the structure. You’re not eliminating lumber. You’re just moving it.

So, is steel better? It’s recyclable. It doesn’t warp. It’s termite-proof. But it costs more. It’s harder to work with. And it punishes mistakes. Wood is forgiving. Steel is unforgiving.
